server is down... no admins online...once again 40 peoples night of DCS is shot down in fire

sigh. were all on the koreian war server insted of 104th....
hopefully an admin will see this and give the server a kick in the pants, or bat phone an admin. 

we need like a steam group where we can see if any admins are online.... and pm them.  (actually just found the steam group and added as many people as i could)
or people to be on TS and not locked in the officers club
or people to be on the fourms chat... 
or what about having someone who knows more about hosting DCS servers write a script that pings the server every 10 mins.... if it gets no reply, it sends a restart message to the server. 
i know that is possible.... i am a computer science major... i know its possible to do code wise.... just not sure of DCS would accept it. 

i probably need to get the upstairs computer set up as a server and jsut mess around with it.... id love to code a "server ass kicker".... but i have NO idea what language it would have to be in or anything. like i said, need to play with it and learn.

Look mate, we are sorry that this happens from time to time, but may I repeat myself, since you came up with that "this is unacceptable" attitude before, and you are doing it again.

 

1st of all: We are sorry, if that happens (and it does VERY VERY RARELY), because we - more than anyone - are interested in providing one of the best and oldest 24/7 servers as the main playground for this great community. WE DO THIS NOW FOR NINE YEARS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION.

 

2nd: However, despite our best efforts, WE DO THIS FOR FREE, we are all working and it may so happen, that some night there is no admin around and we are to bed or real life catches up with us. Our advice? Chill out and WAIT!

 

3rd: We do not ow you anything. Absolutely: ZERO!

 

4th: If someone feels betrayed or dissapointed that he donated and can't play on our server for a couple of hours (in a whole year), we feel very sorry for that, because we appreciate every single donation very very much. However, be advised: it is a tiny friction of the costs we put into the server and likewise, it helps us run a tremendous financial effort that goes entirely into community platforms like our server, teamspeak, this homepage, facebook, events, price contests and much more to almost entirely replace a lacking Multiplayer environment provided by ED, and that 24/7, 365 days a year. In nine years that is 3290 days give or take hosting without interruption. In other words: we have been providing the server for almost 80.000 hours nonstop. So, you either see the huge good portion about it and actually appreciate what we are doing (including a tremendous amount of our personal free time being dedicated to your free to play environment) and accept that nothing is 100% perfect. Or you do not appreciate it and simply do not donate. For me it would be absolutely not understandable, but to each his own. No one is forced to like us and we most certainly do not come without flaws.

 

But, and that is my huge BUT: Please change your attitude in here, because it is way way off. If you have a major in computer science - which you have mentioned a couple of times so far - I may give the same answer as the last time: bring your skills to be useful to the community and program that helpful tool to help us out. Otherwise, pls stop with your inappropriate rants, because it is not far from insulting. And we do not like it.

 

And I haven't seen a single "thank you" from you so far - which of course we do not expect at all. But at least don't rant at us, if you catch my drift.

When you have put as much time as we have, as much money as we have and as much effort as we have into our server then you can come at us with this attitude.

 

Like IronMike says we owe you absolutely NOTHING!

 

If the server goes down its not our fault, we took the step as a squadron to spend money on upgrading our hardware AND sent our box off to a data centre to be able to provide the community with the best platform possible.

We did this with money that our members all chipped in for and some public donations, but the vast majority of the cost was covered by the squadron!

 

Donations are exactly that.... donations... they do not entitle you or anyone else to the attittude you have displayed, we do NOT provide you with a paying service!!!  Your attitude stinks and frankly its f-ing insulting that you think this is appropriate.  You have no idea about the amount of energy we have put into providing you with what you so blatently take for granted, a stable server with great connection speed that is populated around the clock.

 

Think you can do a better job?... go ahead be my guest!

 

We are not some company who have agreed to provide you with something, the server was down for about 6 hours because there was no admin online to restart it after DCS crashed (not our fault the sim is unstable). 

 

I work 12 hours a day 60 hours a week and I am entitled to some sleep as are the rest of our admins.  We cannot be available 24 hours a day to service the server, we do this for free, we do not charge you for using our server so you have no right to come at us like this.

 

IronMike quoted we have been doing this for 9 years.... think long and hard about that Kain..... 9 years!  A lot of personal sacrificies have been made by myself and others during this time including setting alarms during the middle of the night to wake up and check if the server is still running ok, going to sleep with the PC left on and Teamspeak running with the volume on loud to hear pokes / messages about the server going down, waking up early on days off to make sure its still running... NO other squadron gives you the level of commitment we do.

 

We are not sitting on our arses checking the server every day or so, but there are times when we have no one available when something goes wrong, thats just the way it is.

 

The main reason our server is so popular is because we spend so much time monitoring it and making sure you the public have somewhere to fly, no one comes close to the amount of time and effort we have put in over the years to get our server to the status it has now as the most popular combat server in the Sim.

 

Sometimes however the server will be down because we all have lives outside of DCS, families and commitments, during these times your just going to have to man up and deal with it.  The Virtual Aerobatics server aside, we have one of the strongest uptimes of any server within the sim and we have done for years!

 

We will look into having some script working but there is no guarantee we will be able to do this.

 

If you post here again with the same attitude you will have to get used to flying in other servers because I won't let you back in ours, you have no right... none what so ever to think you can talk to us like this after everything we have done for you and the others that use our server.

 

Our server being down is acceptable, you posting threads like this isn't!

yes.. i admit the first time i posted about this (months ago) i was out of line. shit... i get it. i got chewed out, said i was out of line and i was sorry. 

but this time i think you misunderstood stood me. i didnt mean to be a shit head..... 

as for contributing.... ya, i dont come on the forums much. to me, the only reason to be here would be to say that the server is down when all other means of communication fail. 
but i have helped MANY MANY MANY people out in the server with learning how to fly the saber, to keyboard short cuts to shut up the ATC. i try to be friendly. 

its like you guys missed the WHOLE PART of my post where i said I WOULD LOVE TO CODE A PROGRAM SO THIS DOSNT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!! and help out.... but i dont know where i would start. if you could point me at the old program that no longer works.... if someone still it....send me the files..... knowing how it was done before REALLY REALLY would help me get a start. however, right now im looking for a job and doing little things to try to stay afloat. i dont have time to sit and code for 6 to 9 hours.... i do have time to read threw an old script and see how it worked with old DCS

hell... nor do i have any of the programs i used to use.... hard drive failure..... so like i said... if someone can point me in the right direction, let me know how the hosting side works, or let me get time to host my own server and play with it....

after PMing EVERYONE in team speak taht i could.... i went to here and posted this. i was hopeing that an admin was on the fourms doing mod shit and would see this post, be able to phone call or steam PM or whatever a server admin in real life who was on duty or how ever you guys handle it. i knew that no one on TS was actually their....so i went here. 

i then found the 104th steam group and added as many people as i could.... once again hoping that i could open a line of communication. 

and i then suggested different ways i have personally seen other servers on other games keep their server up.... most of the time the games they host isnt so damn unstable.... its mostly PMing admins so hackers can get banned (CSS, COD1, COD2, arma 2... things of that nature)

if suggesting different  methods of having lines of communication pisses you guys off..... well then you need a big disclaimer that says "we are not open to outside ideas....." which i know sint true. you guys listened when we said "drag-on shield" sucked and added bison. 

most servers have form mods and server/TS mods..... again.... has hopeing that a fourm mod could contact a server mod with methods i dont have access too.  THAT WAS MY INTENTIONS! 

and from what i just learned on TS.... it seems that my last line in that post pissed you guys off. your shooting the messagner.... looking back on it, ya probably wasnt polite....


PS. back in 2003 to 2006 we had a realism COD UO and later a COD 2 server with the SOG group...... i helped admin that server, doing a lot of technical work on it. I KNOW YOUR STRUGGLE. like i said... i didnt mean to come off as hostile.

It is good that you are helping out ppl on the server and being friendly and we hope you continue to do so.

 

and of course, the messenger got shot, but since these guys probably didnt ask or even oblige you to pass on that utterly inappropriate msg to us, you made it a bit of your own stand, which is why you got these responses. I am sure you understand, and I hope that you understand our points.

Maybe you are even lucky and will be able to contact Panzertaard, which could be unlikely though, he's been afk for a long time now.

 

 

As for automated admin contacting: You have to understand: If no one sees the server down or is available on TS, it means really NO ONE is around. Not at home or simply zero percent available. and it is rarely that this happens to all admins together, which are the times when you experience what you experienced. So even calling a particular admin wouldnt change anything in that case. No one's gonna drive home from work, or get up in the middle of the night (although we even do that occasionally - bizarre enough). In these rare cases, simply post here - and a simple notification suffices - and the first admin to come back will find your message (probably after already checking on the server anyway).

 

However, once again - and this you can pass back to those who feel they donated for nothing - we don't owe the server being up to anyone. Sometimes a little bit of appreciation and patience is the right thing to display. Once in a while without DCS on the 104th server won't stop the world spinning (although almost, I get that lol).

 

Now, I hope we understand each other, because in the past time we had a couple of approaches where us hosting the server was taken for granted, and that should not be, as much as we "grant" you to relentlessly continue in putting up the effort and constantly improving which is within our possibilities.

 

Never forget, what we do, we most and foremost do for the community, and we do it with great dedication, love and passion. And we sincerely hope that the majority enjoys it.

dude i think ive actually played other games with panzer tard...... did he play men of war series??? i know ive heard that name before and im 90% sure it wasnt on DCS. but thanks for the link... ill look at that before bed. you know your a nerd/CSCI major when you dream about code....

and i didnt reply to the first post because i thought i talked to the same people on TS later than night and got it sorted/got my ass chewed.... but ya. probably should have replyed. 

and ya, i dont expect you to drop everything.... but, i just figured.... like, the friends i play a VAST majority of games with, i have them on skype, facebook, i have their phone numbers.... and im sure most of the 104th dudes do the same.... the faster word gets out, and to more people.... the faster we might find someone who is free and able to kick the server.

good mate, phone is a last resort for us though, because it goes between distant countries (in Europe) and also between Europa and the states, so yeah, a bit over the top.. But again, if no one checked, phone won't help, it simply means: no one is home and cant check anyway. everyone of us near a remote desktop possibility will check anyway ;-)
